What's Your Rate?

- “What’s your rate?” “Well, what’s your budget?” Don’t be that person. If someone asks for your rate, give them one and give it confidently. No caveats, no “but I am open to negotiating.” Just give your rate and if they give a hard “no” THEN you can bring up negotiations if you still want to. Having no confidence in your rate signals you don’t believe your worth OR don’t even know it. Not a good look

- Can’t give a rate yet? Not enough info about the project but the client is insisting “just give me a broad range.”? Don’t panic, this is what minimums are for. Give them your minimum, or the lowest range they can expect for the project if you have a bit more info, and tell them that they can expect more if XYZ. Sometimes that’s all they need to get the ball rolling with their client. A lot of these people are working as middlemen. They need to know your rate so they can know how to quote THEIR rate to THEIR client and book the project.
